“We are VAV (Pablo Bolinches, Darragh Breathnach and Daria Leikina). A Spaniard, an Irishman and an Australian, who met whilst working in Spain together. We have completed various installations and workshops together and with each of them we tried to focus on the unique opportunities a particular material might afford. Analysis and experimentation are key elements in our work process. We always try to push the boundaries of what materials are, their capabilities and our perceptions of them. We intend to provide an experience that is oral, aural and sensually challenging and pose conundrums of what is and what might be.

With this workshop we want to question peoples relationship with natural light in a place where it is constant. What is the importance of dark spaces in such environment? How are the people of Helsinki affected by this light? The workshop will view the light and darkness as materials will attempt to alter people’s perceptions of how they may be perceived. In Helsinki light is ever present. So much of this natural illumination is lost or wasted as people progress with their normal lives but in turmoil they endeavour to cope with this light. We propose to work with this wasted light and highlight the necessity for darkness in a world of extreme and pervasive brightness.

The workshop will begin with a series of small scale experiments and studies of light. We will attempt to identify the affects the light has on the people of Helsinki psychologically and physically and searching for ways in which we can intervene. We will culminate in a small build which will reflect these findings. The final pavilion itself is not the main objective of the workshop but rather the process and journey that are important. We envisage that the final project will emerge into a space that is beautifully dark and magical where people will go not only to escape the sun intrusiveness, but to discover a place where light and its impact is understood.”
